About AEF Italian School in Florence

The Accademia Europea di Firenze is an international school of Italian, Music, Art, Dance and Culture.

Founded in 2005 by Edy Frollano, the Accademia Europea di Firenze began as an Italian language school for foreigners. Over time, the school expanded its curriculum to include humanistic studies, music, the liberal arts and the performing arts, while providing an extraordinary combination of quality and individual attention. Thanks to this philosophy, the Accademia is able to offer the most complete response for any training or educational need.

The Accademia is located in the very heart of Florence, in Palazzo Niccolini, Via Cavour, 37. In the past, Via Cavour was named Via Larga and it was the city’s widest street and was chosen in the early 1400s by the Medici family as an area for future urban expansion. Here, Cosimo il Vecchio built Palazzo Medici Riccardi, in the centre of the new Renaissance Florence, halfway between the cathedral and the church of San Marco.

Now, about six centuries later, students at the Accademia Europea di Firenze have the opportunity to study in a Renaissance palace, perfectly restructured and equipped with the most modern technologies to make it an ideal site uniting study and beauty, learning and culture.

The staff supports the students, accompanying them during their stay and studies to ensure that they never feel they are tourists – but rather citizens of Florence, however temporary. From choice of housing, selection of teachers and development of Study Programs through organization of recreational and cultural activities, everything the Accademia does targets building a full-round experience with the students at its centre.

We strive to create, for our students, the atmosphere of beauty, art and culture which in Florence is in the air – in the streets, the people and the landscape – so that the AEF experience will never be just a study opportunity but a true life experience.

About Florence and AEF

The story of the Accademia Europea di Firenze is a great one because it narrates a multifaceted encounter: between two people, between two cultures, between two different places in the world. And because it has generated other encounters and other cultural exchanges – and every day, links many different places across the world. The story began in 2003. Gustavo Maranhao, a Brazilian entrepreneur, decided to take a sabbatical year in Florence. He began to become acquainted with the city, but he soon realized that the most effective tool for really establishing contact with a place and its people is its language. He approached one of Florence’s many schools for foreigners and there he met his Italian teacher, Edy Frollano. The two immediately struck up a fast friendship which proved capable of stimulating cultural comparisons and suggesting new adventures. A short time later, Edy and Gustavo decided to found their school, a place which could go beyond teaching Italian and other subjects to produce beauty and culture. The Accademia Europea di Firenze opened in 2005. Gustavo began to spend a part of the year in Brazil – where his family of origin lives – and a part in Florence, with his ‘other’ family, the AEF. His primary commitment is to creating the conditions for other students to live an experience akin to his: a delightful encounter with Italy, its language, its culture.

An affectionate thought and heartfelt thanks to Edy – who made all of this possible.
